I live in Austin, Texas. If you're thinking of moving here, save yourself the trouble and stay where you are. Austin used to be a haven for tolerance, diversity and people who knew how to say howdy and hold doors open for you. Since the early 90's, the gentrification of Austin has been in full swing and though it's resulted in a better infrastructure (though this is argueable), more employment and more revenue for the city (read: taxes), the truth is that long gone are the days of the things that made Austin famous to begin with. A combination of our own successes and what i call the Californication of Austin has resulted in a city where the priorities have shifted from tolerance and diversity to people being more concerned with being seen in their SUV, drinking the right coffee, going to the "right" clubs, and yammering their filthy meatholes on their cell fones while driving recklessly around town. So stay where you are unless you're a misfit with a soul and a streak of kindness and compassion that's matched only by your rage against corporate conformidity... then come on down and make this your home. |
